If you ride MTB Downhill, you already know one thing: a crash doesn’t always start with an obvious fall.
A high-speed loss of control, a sliding front wheel on technical terrain, an awkward landing after a jump, or a sudden change in the trail surface can happen in a fraction of a second.
That is exactly what makes the Alpinestars Tech-Air® MX with Downhill Algorithm so interesting.
⚡ More Than a Protector — It’s an Intelligent Airbag System
The most interesting thing about Tech-Air® MX isn’t simply the fact that it has an airbag.
Alpinestars developed a dedicated Downhill Algorithm for MTB, using data collected from professional athletes since 2022.
The algorithm is designed around the unique movements and dynamics associated with Downhill riding, including:
- 🏁 High-speed riding
- 🪨 Technical terrain
- 🦘 Jumps and drops
- 🌄 Constantly changing surfaces
- ⚠️ Loss-of-control situations
- 💥 Abnormal movements associated with crashes
This matters because a motorcycle airbag system cannot simply be transferred to MTB without considering the very different riding dynamics.
Jumping, landing, riding through rock gardens, berms and technical sections all create movements that are unique to Downhill.
According to Alpinestars, the Downhill Algorithm was specifically developed to recognize these characteristics.
🧠 Six Sensors Continuously Analyze Your Movement
Inside Tech-Air® MX is a 6-sensor electronic system, consisting of:
- A 3-axis accelerometer
- A 3-axis gyroscope
- An integrated ECU within the back-protection system
The system operates independently and does not require GPS or external sensors.
In simple terms, instead of waiting until you hit the ground to react, the system continuously analyzes your movements and detects situations that may lead to a crash.
💨 32–45 Milliseconds — Faster Than You Can React
When a crash is detected, the airbag can deploy in approximately 32–45 milliseconds, depending on the system size.
Once deployed, the airbag expands to provide protection around the shoulders, chest, back and upper arms.
Alpinestars states that the system can reduce the energy transferred to the rider by up to 82% compared with conventional passive chest protection.
That figure comes from the manufacturer and should not be interpreted as meaning that every crash will result in an 82% reduction in impact energy.
🛡️ It’s Not Just About the Airbag
Another important feature is that Tech-Air® MX isn’t simply an inflatable airbag.
The system also incorporates a Nucleon PLASMA CE Level 1 back protector, featuring a honeycomb-style structure designed to balance protection, weight and ventilation.
Even after the airbag has deployed and deflated, the passive CE Level 1 back protection remains in place.
🔋 Up to 30 Hours of Battery Life
Battery life is always a concern when bringing electronic equipment onto the trail.
According to Alpinestars, Tech-Air® MX provides up to approximately 30 hours of battery life on a full charge.
Even more interesting, around one hour of charging can provide approximately eight hours of riding time.
The system also connects to the Tech-Air® App via Bluetooth, allowing riders to manage riding modes, check system status, perform diagnostics and update firmware.
🎯 Multiple Riding Modes
Tech-Air® MX isn’t limited to one type of riding.
The system supports:
DOWNHILL • MX • MX RACE • ENDURO • RALLY
For MTB riders, however, the key feature is clearly the Downhill Mode and its dedicated algorithm designed around the specific dynamics of Downhill riding.
🤔 IS IT WORTH THE MONEY?
At the time of writing, Alpinestars EU lists the Tech-Air® MX with Downhill Algorithm at €599.95.
That’s certainly not an inexpensive piece of protective equipment.
But for riders who regularly ride high-speed Downhill, bike parks, jumps and drops, technical trails or racing, an active airbag system can be a serious investment in additional protection.
What makes this system particularly interesting is that Alpinestars didn’t simply take an existing airbag platform and put it into MTB gear.
The company says it used data from professional athletes to develop a dedicated algorithm specifically for Downhill riding.
And in my opinion, that’s the real story behind Tech-Air® MX.
